Frontier Talks. Green Investment Under Liberalisation: China’s Role in Uzbekistan’s Double Transition

The Institute for Advanced International Studies announces the upcoming session of Frontier Talks, featuring Dr. Frank Maracchione, ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies, SOAS University of London.

As Uzbekistan advances its economic liberalisation agenda while pursuing a transition towards a more environmentally sustainable development model, the interaction between foreign investment, institutional reforms, and green development is becoming increasingly significant. China's growing economic engagement in Uzbekistan raises important questions about the role of international capital in shaping the country's evolving development trajectory.

During the session, Dr. Maracchione will explore the relationship between economic liberalisation and green investment, with particular attention to China's role in Uzbekistan's simultaneous economic and environmental transitions. The discussion will provide an opportunity to examine how Chinese investment interacts with domestic policy priorities, institutional transformations, and the broader political economy of sustainable development.

The upcoming Frontier Talk will offer a platform for scholars, researchers, students, and policy practitioners to engage in a timely discussion on Uzbekistan's economic transformation, the dynamics of China–Central Asia cooperation, and the opportunities and challenges associated with financing the green transition.
