On 28th September 2024, the Institute for Advanced International Studies (IAIS) hosted a significant meeting between Deputy Director Shakhboz Akhmedov and a distinguished team of IAIS researchers, comprising Ulugbek Ishankhodjaev, Durbek Amanov, Hamza Boltaev, Rustam Makhmudov, and Fazliddin Djamalov, with Matthew Blackburn, Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Relations (NUPI). The meeting’s primary objective was to explore promising grant projects and foster enhanced cooperation in the realm of higher education.

In the initial stages of the discussion, Mr. Akhmedov provided a comprehensive overview of Institute’s current initiatives, emphasising its long-term strategic vision to establish robust collaborations with European research institutions. Akhmedov underlined the importance of forging international partnerships as part of IAIS’s broader mission to expand its research capabilities and academic influence across Europe.

Matthew Blackburn, in response, expressed his deep gratitude for the invaluable assistance in organising his recent lectures for both undergraduate and graduate students at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED). He praised the seamless cooperation with IAIS in delivering these educational programmes and emphasised the potential for ongoing collaboration.

During the conversation, Mr. Blackburn also presented insightful information regarding the implementation of grant projects in Central Asia, in which IAIS could play a pivotal role as a partner. His presentation highlighted several initiatives funded by European organisations, which align closely with the institute’s academic interests and regional expertise. These projects offer the potential for IAIS to expand its influence and deepen its involvement in regional research networks.

Furthermore, the Norwegian scholar proposed the development of joint educational initiatives under the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility programme. This opportunity, he noted, could significantly enhance academic exchange and mobility between IAIS and European institutions, providing staff and students alike with access to international research expertise and broadening their educational experience.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to pursuing these collaborative endeavours, marking an important step towards the establishment of long-term partnerships that promise to benefit both institutions and further contribute to advancing higher education and research excellence in the region.
