On December 2-4, representatives of IAIS Centre for Afghanistan and South Asian Studies, led by Hamza Boltaev, undertook a comprehensive visit to Termez, engaging in a series of meetings and site visits that highlighted Uzbekistan’s commitment to regional collaboration and humanitarian efforts.
On the first day, they visited the Termez Cargo Centre, joined by Shukhratmirzo Khodjayev, Head of the Uzbekistan WFP Afghanistan Office, and Bakhtiyor Sharipov, UNICEF representative. This facility, designated an international transport-logistics hub for humanitarian aid in June 2022, plays a crucial role in delivering aid to Afghanistan and other nations under the United Nations’ guidance.
The delegation also toured the Airitom Free Economic Zone, a cornerstone of Uzbekistan’s economic strategy, which attracts foreign and local investments, boosts production and trade, and creates employment, underscoring its importance in the country’s development.
The day concluded with a visit to the Hairaton border bridge, a strategic link facilitating trade and transport between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, being a vital component in regional connectivity, supporting the flow of goods and people while promoting cooperation.
On December 4, the IAIS representatives turned their focus to academic and diplomatic initiatives. A visit to the Educational Centre for Training Afghan Citizens included discussions with Ilkhom Mamaradjabov, the Centre’s Head, and Muhammad Idris Zarshui, Consul General of Afghanistan in Termez. They also visited the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Termez to better understand its operational framework. These meetings explored avenues for academic and political collaboration and capacity-building efforts, reflecting Uzbekistan’s enduring support for Afghanistan.
This three-day visit underscored Termez’s critical role as a hub for humanitarian assistance, economic activity, and academic collaboration. By fostering stronger ties with Afghanistan and regional stakeholders, Uzbekistan continues to solidify its position as a leader in promoting stability, development, and regional integration.
