The grant project “Climate Migration in Central Asia: Challenges and Solutions” of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation of Germany was implemented

From May 15 to November 15, 2022, within the framework of the small grants support program of the Rosa Luxembourg Foundation of Germany, an international project was implemented on the topic “The problems of climate migration in Central Asia: challenges and solutions”.

The main goal of the project is to determine the possible negative consequences of climate change in Central Asia and give recommendations for taking effective measures against them, while summarizing the assessments and forecasts of foreign and national experts. The task was also set to increase the relevance of this problem in the academic circles of the region, and to bring to the general public the position of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the voice of national scientists and practitioners on this issue.

As part of the project, an international conference was held on October 19, and on October 20 and 29, two master classes were organized for students.

The speakers at the international conference were professor of the Open University of Great Britain L. Lombarzzi, Head of the Central Asian office of the Rosa Luxembourg Foundation M. Linke, Deputy director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Economic Research E. Karimov, Chairman of the environmental movement “BIOM” of Kyrgyzstan V. Korotenko, researcher of NGO “The Little Earth” (Tajikistan) T. Idrisov. National scientists, experts and practitioners in this field were presented by the Chairman of the Committee for the Development of the Aral Sea Region and Ecology of the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan B. Alikhanov, the national coordinator of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime A. Irmanov, an independent researcher B. Eshonov and others. The academia of the UWED is represented by the dean of the Faculty of International Relations M. Bakhadirov and the director of the laboratory of the Institute for International Advanced Studies A. Seitov.

Trainer of the master class, organized on October 20, became a specialist V. Korotenko, on October 29, during the second master class, the chairman of the committee of the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan B. Alikhanov acquainted students with the theoretical aspects of current regional environmental problems.

The project consists of 2 parts, for the realization of the final part of the grant program in January-March 2023, the UWED signed a cooperation agreement with the RLS. During this period, a collective monograph from selected scientific papers of the participants of the international conference will be published.
