Frontier Talks: Exploring Uzbekistan’s WTO Accession and Afghanistan’s Economic Development under the Taliban

The Institute for Advanced International Studies (IAIS) is pleased to announce the second instalment of its #FrontierTalks series, set to focus on two highly relevant and strategic topics shaping the Central Asian region:

I. Uzbekistan’s strategic course towards WTO accession

II. Afghanistan’s Economy under the Taliban: Development in the Context of International Isolation

Dr. Azamat Seitov will focus this time on Uzbekistan’s path towards accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that marks a pivotal shift in the country’s economic policy and international trade relations. The discussion will cover the implications for Uzbekistan’s domestic industries, foreign investments, and market liberalisation. Furthermore, Dr. Seitov will explore how WTO accession aligns with Uzbekistan’s broader economic reforms, aimed at fostering sustainable growth and improving its competitiveness on the global stage.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, Afghanistan’s economy has faced profound challenges, exacerbated by international isolation. Rustam Makhmudov, a leading expert on Afghanistan, will offer a critical assessment of Afghanistan’s current economic landscape. His presentation will explore the complex dynamics at play, including the impact of sanctions, the cessation of foreign aid, and the nation’s struggle to sustain basic economic functions amidst these restrictions. He will also delve into the long-term consequences of Afghanistan’s isolation on its regional economic partnerships and the humanitarian crisis unfolding within the country.

This upcoming #FrontierTalk will provide a comprehensive overview of two critical developments in the region. Both topics not only hold significant implications for the future of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan but also for the stability and prosperity of the broader Central Asian region. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how economic policy, international relations, and strategic development shape these nations’ paths forward.

As with the first session, the IAIS will continue its mission to foster informed, open dialogue on key geopolitical issues.
